Aitken was singing a variety of genre of music; Meringue, Rhythm & Blues, Soul, Calypso, Mento and his great love the Boogie. Laurel Aitkens made several personal appearances at one of Jamaica’s most famous Glass Bucket Club. He also appeared on stage at the Vere Johns opportunity knock shows held at the Majestic Cinema on Spanish Town Road, the Carib Theatre Half Way Tree and Tivoli Cinema on Spanish Town Road situated not many steps from Kingston Spanish Town Market. Laurel Aitkens is one of the versatile performer ever to appear on the music scene. He is a clean living guy and keeps himself really fit, an icon for the younger generations of Jamaican performers. Laurel Aitkens made a number of singles in the 50's, which include his 1957 Jamaican hit, the R&B style "Roll Jordan Roll." Laurel's big break came in a year later with the release of the "Little Sheila” and "Boogie in my Bones" double A sided single. Little Sheila being in a mixture of Mento and rhythm & blues and Boogie In My Bones was simply boogie that became the first single ever released on the new Island Record label, founded by the UK Britisher Chris Blackwell famous for Bob Marley and the Wailers rise to universal superstardom. |
