Isn't it fitting that at long last Lee "Scratch" Perry is recognised for his work, and isn't it fitting that the Grammy awards are held at Madison Square Garden built with the great inventor of the 19th century; Thomas Alva Edison. Finally, the greatest inventor of music since first bursting upon the music scene at the famous Studio One Studios way back in 1959. 44 years Perry has been associated with the music business. Lee "Scratch" Perry served his musical apprenticeship with Clement "Coxsone" Dodd for 6 years as errand boy, record distributor, henge man, DJ, singer, producer. Lee Perry has experience hard times over the years, but what he has achieved in the field of music at his Black Ark Studios can never be surpassed. Great men are not recognised in his own country. Lee Perry now residing in Switzerland with a beautiful Swiss wife and two children, has had to wait 44 years which is more like an eternal life time to wait for recognition, but not from his country of birth. On Sunday 23rd February 2003 Lee Perry received a Grammy Award in honour for best Reggae CD album; Jamaican ET. Congrats to the master record producer of the century. It is now time for Lee "Scratch" Perry to be recognised by the Jamaican Music industry and the government of Jamaica to bestow a few honours his way for his long services to the Jamaican music industry as a whole |
