Lee "Scratch" Perry: Part 2

Reggae Doctor

Coxsone Dodd had no hesitation in taking "Scratch" as his A and R man even though he had no idea of Perry's great musical talents. Lee Perry remained with the Clement Coxsone Dodd's recording studio team for almost 7 years. Perry left  studio one recording because  he felt he had served out his apprenticeship dating  from 1959 to 1966. During the time Lee Perry spent with Coxsone Dodd, Perry was treated with disrespect by Coxsone Dodd. Soon after leaving Coxsone, Lee Perry went on a musical advanced learning curve journey linking up with the likes of Prince Buster, Bunny Lee, Bryon Lee and Joe Gibbs before setting up his own Recording Studio. Lee Perry which  branded as the Black Ark Studio!

Long Shot Kick De Bucket

Lee Perry set up his Black Ark Studio in 1974. Then in 1983 a great explosive type fire  blew off  the roof of his Black Ark Recording Studio. However, while working with Joe Gibbs in his recording studios, Lee Perry produced “Long Shot Kick De Bucket," recorded and sung by the Pioneers. No one actually knew what name to give the new  type rhythm sound until one bright spark came up with the name of Reggae! That recording was actually the first reggae sound produced at Joe Gibbs studio by “Lee Perry.” It can be noted  however, that from his Black Ark Recording Studio, Lee Perry  produced a wealth of creative innovative reggae music sounds!
