| Jukebox 7inch 45rpmThe 45-rpm single disc was playing up to eight minutes per side when it first came on the commerce market scene. The 45-rpm 7inch vinyl record was introduced in 1949 but in the 50s it became a big hit with jukebox manufacturers! By then the eight minutes of recording music had been reduced to around 2 minutes, which the jukebox owners welcomed with open arms (4 times the revenue!). And as the rock ‘n’ roll era was in full swing jukebox owners made a killing from rock ‘n’ roll fanatics.
| Bodyguard Prince BusterIn Jamaica the 45rpm vinyl 7inch record was a great hit with sound systems proprietors such as Clement Coxsone Dodd, Duke Reid who branded their sound systems names such as Coxsone Downbeat and Duke Reid the Trojan! There were other sounds such as King Edwards. These sound system operators were masters of the most popular sounds form the 1950s until Prince Buster became champion of Jamaican music with his brand of music and sound system. Prince Buster was lurking in the shadows working for Clement Coxsone Dodd as his bodyguard, distributing Coxsone's studio one records, and sometimes even performing as A & R man in the recording studios! |
